  2. All schools and ratings are equal in the eyes of the FAA.  Get your private, instrument, and commercial ratings at your local airport's FBO flight school to save money.  Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Florida and Arizona are also schools to consider.

  3. The FAA has some great information on how to choose a school and what to look for when choosing a school. Since they are the ones who will certify you, I think they would be the best place to start. (PS - Even if you are not in the US, there is a lot of good information here.)

Once you've got that figured out, there is a whole heap more of information available through their web site starting with this stuff: http://www.faa.gov/pilots/training/

  4. I have to agree that Embry Riddle and North Dakota both have excellent credentials. As far as commercial schools go, I have heard good things about ATP. As has already been mentioned, they are expensive.

Should you choose to go with a lesser known school, just make sure that you don't pay all your tuition costs up front. Go with an outfit that will let you pay as you go or at least only in small blocks at a time. One well known helicopter school that just went out of business had their students obtain loans for the entire amount and pay up front. Most of those students are now left holding the bag, some for as much as $70,000.

  5. University of North Dakota, Southern Illinois University, ATP Flight Schools, Spartan, etc.  There are dozens of them out there.

One thing they all have in common...  They're all EXPENSIVE!  Public universities like UND and SIU may offer student loans or scholarships.  Commercials like ATP or Spartan may offer financing, but you will eventually have to pay them back.

Do some research to find the program that fits your needs and your budget.

  6. First you can type that question into the search box at the top of this page and get a wealth of information. Next go get a copy of Flying Magazine, there are a ton of ads for schools, plus you can drool over the new airplanes.

For a University UND(Univ. North Dakota), Ohio State, are 2 of the biggest but many offer programs. Also ERAU. You have a lot of research ahead of you. Start by looking at these links:

If you are serious this will keep you busy.

The next question that is asked is "How much money do pilots make?" Here is a link for that to.

  7. Lewis University in Romeoville, Illinois
