  1. You can see what recessive genes are present in the population, because  two related heterozygotes are more likely to have the same recessive allele than two unrelated heterozygotes - even if all the phenotypes are the same, since the dominant alleles are the same.

It also decreases the heterozygocity of a population, making more homozygotes.

  2. developing new hybrids

  3. This practice has been used in studying genetics since Gregor Mendel's first experiments with the common garden pea. He used self-fertilization to produce an F1 generation, and then crossed two plants from the F1 generation to produce the F2 generation. When he examined the results from the F2 generation, he discovered his famous dihybird 9:3:3:1 ratio.

Additionally, breeders have used selective inbreeding to increase the likelihood of achieving desired traits in dogs and cats. This has resulted in the prevalence of certain genetically linked cancers and congenital defects in dogs. For example, generations of inbreeding in Labrador Retrievers has lead to this breed having a high occurrence of hip dysplasia.

  4. Inbreeding is used extensively to generate populations of lab mice and rats for research.  By selectively inbreeding over many generations, it is possible to create a population that is nearly identical genetically.  Granted, the mice tend to have health problems and aren't always the most clever of rodents (i.e. they would never survive in the wild), a genetically homogeneous population can help minimize variables in experiments.

  5. inbreeding in animals will result in a population that can look much more similar.  Think dog breeds.  On the other hand this same inbreeding will create more genetic defects, as anyone who has taken a trip to Appalachian West Virginia knows.  :)
