  1. The odds of 1 ticket winning are 1 in 146 million, regardless of how many others play.

The odds of a GROUP of 30 million winning if they coordinate (or of you winning if you bought 30 million separate tickets) is about 20.5%.

The odds of SOMEONE winning if 30 million people play are actually about 16-17%, not 20.5%, because the 30 million people won't all be playing different numbers.

    Hope this helps.

  2. The odds of any one person winning powerball for the maximum prize is 1 in 146 million.  (based on probability theory and taken from the website)

If 30 million people play, the odds of the jackpot being paid to someone in that 30 million is 30 million divided by 146 million; approximately a 21% chance of the jackpot being paid out.  This means that, if you act in a group of 30 million people, and you each buy just one ticket, you will have a 21% chance if winning (rather than 1 in 146 million).

UNFORTUNATELY!!! What usually happens in one of these "groups" is that one of the people buying a ticket is a "company" that is trying to encourage you to join in this mutual ticket purchase.  The company will buy one extra ticket into the system.  If the system wins, you will NEVER see one penny, because you cannot tell which ticket you purchased in the group, since there is one more ticket than the 30 million purchases.

Mutual lottery ticket purchases are a scam by one person to be able to obtain the 21% chance to win it all, and only pay $1 to do it...the other $30 are paid by people duped into believing they are part of a group that will win.  If you have the chance to play in such a group...do NOT take it (unless you just so happen to have 30 million friends).

  3. The odds don't change with the amount of people playing - whether it's 1 or 1 million playing, the odds stay the same.

However, the potential of having to split a winning jackpot does increase when there are more people playing.

  4. If 1 person played, wouldn't that be 1 in 30,000,000?

  5. rotfl.... 1/30,000,000

    =)
