  1. Since people are inherently competitive, having a point system keeps them coming back, trying to get more points and climbing higher in the artificial heirarchy of imagined intelligence.

The points are really a reflection of how much time you are able to spend reading YA! questions and how much time you spend answering. Of course, depending on how long you're been associated with YA!, there is no real way to determine which equation (more points=more intelligence) or (more points=more time spent) or (more points=fewer questions asked vs more questions answered) is valid.

  2. points are just an incentive to move up the leaderboard. you also need points to ask questions. the more you answer and vote the more points you accumulate. you can do much else with the points but it adds to the fun, as long as you keep in mind that you are here to help people with the knowledge you have.
