  1. i have been riding dressage for about 8 years now, and i would have to say the best breed of horse for dressage i have ridden was a hanoverian arabian cross. arabians bring the nice swingy movement that attracts everyones attention, and the hanoverian brings the nice confirmation and "uphill" balance into the horses movement. and they are good at tackling many different disciplines.

  2. All breeds you mentioned can do all the disciplines.  Quarter horses are built differently and do not excel in dressage or jumping as much as thoroughbreds.  Freisans are a heavier breed so while they do well in dressage, they tend to not do as well in jumping.  Arabians will do well jumping, but tend to not be able to do as well in dressage.

Personally, for what you want, I would go with a thoroughbred.  While they do not excel in dressage, they are built for it more than Arabians.  They are also excellent jumpers.

Remember, though - each horse is an individual and just because the breed as a whole is not suitable for a sport does not mean a particular horse would not be suitable for your needs.

  3. I would recommend an Arabian.   They are naturally great for dressage, their carriage is beautiful, and they have a lovely nature. Yes I have one, and have had more before, so very biased, they are great all rounders, and have a lovely personality.  Basically, love and trust, and they will do any thing you want.

  4. A quarter horse is probably best for you. An Arabian is great, but they're smaller and more tempermental. Because of their size they aren't generally the best jumpers. Freisans are typically unable to canter because of their conformation. Thoroughbreds normally are just too big for most people to handle. Plus if they fall over on top of you they weigh more so you're more likely to get killed. Deffinatly go with a Quarter Horse.

  5. Thoroughbred. You may see all 4 breeds in the dressage arena, and you might see a QH in the hunter/jumper/eq. ring, but only if it looks like a TB or Warmblood.  Arabs don't do regular hunter, though as long as it can jump, no one cares what breed you do jumpers & eq. with. Fresians are not known for their ability to leave the ground. The Thoroughbred however, can do all 4 and is popular in all 4.

  6. what class in high school is the best?

thats what i think about when i see these questions.  any class in high school is as good as the next. any car is as good as the next (to me anyway).

any breed can do dressage, jumping, hunter, and equitstion.

arabs can jump, they're just not breed/good at it(from the arab show's ive been to and the arabs i've owned, i know... i also know of only 1 arab i saw in person who could jump like no other, also worth a small fortune)

anyway, you want one horse that does all those areas better then the rest? go find a cross breed, and go look for adds that have those on it for each horse. you may end up missing a great horse if you go just by breed.

  7. The Friesian is one of my most favorite breeds. I would love to have one and it is a goal to own one in my lifetime!

(Check out Anton on this website, he is absolutely gorgeous!!)

Quarter Horse would be my second choice. I have owned them and they are wonderful. The Thoroughbred would be next followed by the Arabian.

I think for what you are wanting to do with the horse, the Friesian would be the right choice.

Best of luck on whatever breed you choose!

  8. Any breed can be used for any discipline if its been trained in that area. Typically, for english, Thoroughbreds do very well because they have gorgeous lines and are typically fluid movers. They also are very tall, which is great for jumping. I think a fresian would be a gorgeous dressage horse, but again, it depends on the particular horses level of training and experience.

  9. Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses are known to be the most well rounded of those four. Arabians aren't known for their jumping ability, but some are very good at it. And some Freisians lack the ability to canter due to their conformation.

It depends on the specific horse, though.

  10. Well, its hard between arabian and thoroughbred, but over all it would have to be a thoroughbred. They make wonderful jumping and hunter horses. They have a nice body carrige (if trained right) for dressage. And equitation is on you, but i have seen thoroughbreds in all of these classes!

good luck! i hope you find that horse.

  11. They all excel at one of those disciplines. Friesians are known to be in dressage. Thoroughbreds are known to do hunter, and jumping. Arabians are (usually) good at hunter and some are great jumpers. Quarter horses are usually good at hunter, equitation, and some are good jumpers. It depends on what personality in a horse you want to. TB's and Arab's are known to be on the somewhat high strung side (not always) are they like this. Quarter horses are known to be willing, versatile, and calm but it depends on the horse. Friesians are usually "gentle giants." If I were you I would study more about these breeds more on what they excel in and what their temperament is too. Go to your local library and read up on them. If I were you I would get a Appendix horse which is a cross between a Thoroughbred and a Quarter Horse. They excel in jumping, hunter, and equitation. Good luck!

  12. Any of those breeds for the disapline that you do

  13. I don't have much experience with Thoroughbreds. Arabians and Freisans are pretty appealing to judges in english. Freisans are very popular dressage horses. QH's can do it all, but aren't too appealing for your styles of riding. QH's are more western style. Freisans can be pretty expensive though. Choose wisely. - Char

Btw, Amy is talking a little weird. Of course Freisans can canter!! My friend is a Freisan breeder. Amy is thinking of Pasafinos probably. Also, Arabs are good for jumping. A fellow 4-Her shows a Arab in english and she pretty much wins every class. It also depends where you live. I live in QH country.. so the judges prefer QH's over Morgans like my horse.

  14. It all depends on training. However,  you are more likely to find a QH or a TB that is suitable for your disciplines as they are quite versetile breeds. Generally, QHs are gentler and easier to handle than TBs. It also depends on your ability as a rider.

  15. umm well typically arabians are only used for breeding, in hand halter showings, and saddleseat.. which of course is an english sport but you sisn't mention saddle seat as one of your intrests

so an arabian would most likely not be the best breed for you even thought they are super smart and gorgeous! hehe

but i think a Thoroughbred, or a thoroughbred mix, (warmblood) would be good.. a freisan is a gorgeous dressage horse but i've never seen them as good jumpers.. i'm sure they could be since they are strong and athletic..but go towards more of a thoroughbred type horse! =)

oh and quarter horses make excellent english mounts if they are lean and have the "english" canter, and build

it's just that most QHs are slower gaited but i've seen alot in shows and they look great!

  16. I would say for you either a sport horse style QH or Thoroughbred. They are the most versatile and could do all the disiplines you mentioned. QH typically have better, more easy going  personalities. Arabians are lovely but not known for their jumping technique, some do just fine but many don't have the style for hunters. Freisans are not good jumpers and won't do well in any of the displines you mention except for dressage. They are fabulous carriage and dressage horses. Another alternative is an appendix QH which is basically half thoroughbred and half QH.

  17. It depends on the individual horse, but here's their strongpoints in general:

Thoroughbred - designed for English. Great for racing, jumping, hunter, and so-so at dressage.

Arabian - designed for English. Strong points are endurance. Weak points are dressage and jumping.

Quarter Horse - very versatile, but designed for Western. Excel in reining, roping, barrel racing, racing, and jumping. Not so good at dressage.

Fresian - designed for English. Very good at dressage. OK at jumping and hunter.

For you, I would say a TB would be best. Keep in mind that many TBs are raced and you might be getting an OTTB.

  18. Friesians are gorgeous horses, but I don't think they'd be the best for jumping. For all those sports, I would look for a warmblood, Thoroughbred, or maybe Quarter Horse like you said. I have a QH that jumps almost 4 feet but my thoroughbred cross gelding can barely jump 2 feet without falling over himself, so it also depends on the horse. I can't picture the Thoroughbred cross doing dressage, but he has a lot of talent for reining! So basically, I think you should look for one of those breeds and then check the horse out, and do not just assume that it's a warmblood (or any breed) and that it must be good at what you want. :-) Good luck in your horse search!
