What broke on my drive train?

I drove out of my yard and up the street, went to put it in second gear and I didn't go anywhere, I stopped got out and looked under the bronco II to see what was happening, the drive shaft was spinning going to the rear differential and the truck wasn't moving. so the problem is within the rear dfferential. what is wrong and how can it be fixed?

you'll have to pull the diff cover for sure to know. It sounds like an axle shaft broke.

if you do not know what is in the diff/bevel housing then you need a garage, it's unlikely you would be able to fix it, plus you need the tools etc.

you probably broke the pinion gear if it don,t move in any of the gears.

In the rear end there is a ring and pinion, and some gears called spider gears that are kept in a pumpkin, any of these gears or the ring and pinion take special tools to replace, your pinion is attached to your drive shaft at the rear end yoke, It rides on the ring, with is attached to the pumpkin with the spider gears in it, most of the time its the spider gears, but if you didn't feel any jerking from the rear end you might of broke your axel, it has 2 one on each side of the differential. if you want to check first for yourself take off the rear cover and look for broken teeth from the gears. and if its an axel turn a wheel and look at the axel for movement if it doesnt move you broke and axel, but all those pieces have to be calibrated or it will self destruct.

Ok slick the reason I asked if it slips in any other gear is it could have been a broken syncro but since your so smart you can figure it out yourself.
