  1. You should have been trying out a couple of years by now. Anyway, just go and do it. Most tryouts are reading from the script. Do not worry about the size of the part, just be happy if you are cast.

  2. you can't expect to get a lead and if you do then you can expect a lot of pressure, being a lead is very demanding and you need to shoot for something you can realistically handle which for a first show is not much.

you should trust your director.  i have been directing for high schools for 6 years and i get a lot of kids who want a lead and get upset when they don't get them, my advice DON'T GET UPSET if you get cast in something smaller than what you want.  the director knows what he/she wants and that will trump you everytime... also the director likely knows how to read actors at auditions and can tell how you will handle a role by how prepared you are for an audition.

so if you want a lead, PREPARE!!!  and kill at auditions.

  3. If you are at all serious about acting then you need to aim lower and learn the craft properly as you go along. Audition for a role you feel comfortable about, acting is not about pretending, it is about being the character and you will find it easiest to to that at first if you chose characters that have a familiar feel to you. Find out what play is being used and read it through a couple of times at home, select your preferred role and go for it but if you are offered something else, do not refuse out of disappointment; your drama teacher knows more than you do about casting. Most of all..enjoy the experience, even the  hard parts of it..otherwise what is the point?
