  1. The strength of your army. The loyalty of your followers. Kingdoms arose from one individual, or group, deciding that they wanted to take power over a certain piece of land. Those that took power and held it declared themselves kings.

  2. Let someone crown you.

  3. Back in the old days when kings were really kings his main purpose was to insure political and economic stability for his nobles. The nobles would decide that they would all agree to the decision of the king so in this way they did not constantly kill each other over disputes about land, women, affronts, etc...

Of course the king had to be certain that each decision he made was acceptable to a majority of his nobles...if enough of the nobles thought they had enough power to overthrow the king and those nobles remaining on the king's side then civil war would take place.

No king has ever really had absolute power. The king had as much power as his nobles allowed him to have.

Today kings are just born into the position and most have no real power at all.

  4. Power, pure and simple, made the king. He had to be a great political and military leader and garner the support of the rest of the powerful families in the area. Mere money was not enough to make one a king, although the king did become a very wealthy man.
