Hi im 17 and looking for a first car. I have around £8500, but dont want something small like a fairly new Corsa. This amount includes insurance, so what I want to do is buy something for around £1000 - £2000 and spend the rest on insurance. It sounds daft and im sure you'll think im nuts but its my decision, so what do you think I should buy? I was thinking Alfa Romeo 156 2.0 or a Seat Leon Cupra. Something sporty, any ideas?

  1. Regardless of money, there is a d**n good reason why 17 year old lads are NOT let loose in 2litre Alfas!  You, and likely someone else, would end up dead the first time it rained.  You simply need experience you do not yet have before you can justify an Alfa.  As it is, over 75% of young males have to make a large claim (they have a BIG accident) in their first year.

Start with a small car, such as 1,000 worth of 1litre VW Polo, and invest your money in Tesco shares!  You will make about 20% in a year, and with a years no-claims bonus (NCB)

will pay a lot less next year for your premium.  Do your apprenticeship, work your way up through 1 litre, then a larger engine such as 1.5 litres, and then 2 litre cars.  Try rear-wheel drive as well as front.

Your second year car could be a Mercedes 190E 1.8, which is a quite quick, large, safe, quiet car with great road manners, that does rather well with the ladies!  It will only cost you a thousand.

Don't put your insurance brokers kids through private school!

  2. Peace and respect to you my friend.

You could buy a car like mine if you liked it. I have an Audi A3 2 litre TDI Sports from brand new and she has many horses. 0 to 60 in around 10 seconds, top speed 130, she returns 45 mpg without even trying and has aircon (full climate control), sports seats, 17 inch alloys, Bose sound system and she goes like hot snot. Your 8.5 K will probably buy you a nice 2nd hand one, but at 17, you will need another 2.5K to insure it I guess. She will last you for years if you look after her. All Audis are super cool cars and you wont have to worry about BMW drivers trying to show off when your woman is with you LOL, my A3 eats Beemers for buffalo fodder and overtakes them like a Tomahawk.

Good luck in your choice, chose wisely.

  3. Well as you say, it's your decision but out of what you have said I think a well looked after Alfa 156 would be a good investment.

  4. try Chevrolet Aveo - maybe even second-hand.

or sth very old but you'll need serious repairs to make it work.

Your best choice : Seat Leon Cupra - it'll last longer than Alfa Romeo 156.

  5. At 17, I would be amazed if any insurance company would offer you a policy on a Cupra at any price, (I know - I drive one!) for which I would be very gratefull .  I would not wish to share a piece of road with a 17 year old in one of those ! or an Alfa. (when they work)  You might have a licence - but you still have to learn how to drive !!

  6. honda civic they never break down is what top gear said

  7. Buy a car that is fuel efficiant and that won't break down I have Mazda 1993 and it works just fine hasn't broken down on me yet.. Toyotas, Hondas and Nissans are very nice cars.

  8. Crazy Horse speak with heap big forked tongue - a BMW 320d has many more horses than an Audi, 0 - 60 in 8.5 seconds, 137 mph, mine still averages 43mpg driven like a t**t. Yes, climate control, ABS, traction control, stability control, CD changer, remote locking, auto dipping mirror, 4 electric windows. It's a 2001, so you could pick one up for around £4000.

I'm sure that Crazy Horses Audi could outrun my BMW - If I gave him many moons head start.

If he still thinks he's big & clever, a 2003 on 330d Sport does 60 in 7 secs, 150 mph, 204bhp, 42mpg. Stick that in um peace pipe & smoke it!

  9. Audi a3, black

  10. While I SERIOUSLY question your financial sense if you think a £2k car + £5k insurance (assuming you can insure a group 15-18 car at all, have you checked?) is a good idea, I admire your spirit!

An Alfa 156 is a cracking car, I know, I've got one. I'd also look at the E34 (88-96) BMW 5 Series for a bit of retro style and comfort, but I'd also suggest taking proper advanced driving lessons if you get a car like either of these. I'm not being patronsing but a powerful car does take a bit of thought to control properly, and at 17 you don't have the years of experience necessary to draw on to drive these cars safely. Fast cars bite back if you drive them improperly, and you'll be going that much faster when you hit whatever you hit!
