  1. You probably had a bald tyre, I had this once when I got an MOT and the guys at the garage said to me it'll cause a blow out so get a new one asap!

  2. There can be a number of causes. The most common cause is a lack of air pressure. In a normal tyre it is the air inside that takes the weight of the car. If this pressure is reduced then the sidewall starts to flex and generate heat. The effect is somewhat similar to repeatedly bending a spoon - it will eventually lose its structural integrity and... BANG!

You can minimise the chances of this happening by checking tyre pressures once a week usually when yoiu fill up and by visually checking for foreign objects.

Would it be a fair guess that the tyre in question hadn't been checked for a while? Also that the damaged tyre smelled of burning?

  3. Wheel exploding, no idea. Tyre exploding could be either punctured or rubber fatigue on an old tyre.

  4. It could be a number of factors.  The tyre pressure could be wrong (too high or too low), it could have been cut by something on the road, it could be a manufacturing fault, etc.

  5. normally its caused by a damaged tyre wall due to clipping a curb....

  6. to much air, to little air ,overloaded or really worn tier

  7. Too little air in the tyre causes the tread & tyre to vibrate more, increasing heat weakening the tyre's sidewalls & structure to the point where catastrophic failure occurs.

This isn't always the drivers fault as the problem could be a slow puncture, however tyre pressures should be checked at least weekly & always before a long journey!

  8. land mine

  9. Low tire pressure is a major cause for tire blow out as the tire overheats due to low air pressure the inside of the tire starts to seperate and boom there goes the tire. The other cause is running over something in the road.

  10. Wow, that's a tough question. It could have been a variety of things. In our salvage yards I see many tires with different problems. You could have had a bad spot on your tire, the wheel could've been a little bent, or you could have just ran over something. It is best to just always keep and eye on your tires. Check the pressure regularly and look along the side walls for bulges and cracks. Good luck!

  11. Q, "What causes tyre blow outs?"

A, One of my pupil's hitting the kerb at a chicane at 20 mph, that's what!

Both the front and rear, nearside tyres went bang, so I had to get local tyre centre to come out to me - wounded! That was one expensive driving lesson!

  12. As already stated in some of the answers their are many contributing factors to a tyre blowing out. From having a bulge on the sidewall (otherwise known as a egg) caused by clipping the curb or a big stone which then when the air gets hot enough bang bye bye tyre to incorrect tyre pressure to mechanical failure (incorrect wheel alignment or other part rubbing up against the tyre or a puncture ie a nail or similar item) all the way threw to a fault in the manufacture of the tyre.
