  1. 18p per mile is about 33¢ in USD, which would be terrible here. And I think we pay less for gas than you.

I would say push to get the whole amount.

  2. You should be getting the full 40 cents, obviously.  Your company has no right to use that as a profit center.

40 cents wouldn't really be enough, but it would at least cover fuel.  The USA IRS rate now is about 58 cents.  You can't even buy fuel for 18 cents.

  3. They're taking the mick! The taxman allows 40p/mile, so you may be able to get a tax rebate for the difference if you can prove your business mileage. It's also worth finding out your car's "cost per mile" figure, try using Google to find this out, but on average, a small Clio/Corsa is around 25p/mile, a Focus/Golf is about 35p/mile and obviously anything bigger will be correspondingly higher.

As for whether it's legal, I'd say there is no actual legal amount, unless it's buried somewhere in your contract. I was iin a similar position a few years back when I used my own car to travel for my work, and I told them they either paid me a proper allowance or gave me a company car!

I got a decent allowance after that!

  4. I only get paid 30p per mile but you can claim up to 48p per mile back from your tax for fuel prices. Keep you pay slips an take them into the tax office. As long as you can prove that you have done then you will get a rebate after filling in a couple of forms.

  5. The government allows you to claim up to 40p per mile for using your own car for business. They consider this amount to be right to include insurance, maint, depreciation and petrol.

The AA and the RAC have lobbied to have it increased.

A "decent" company will pay the full 40p, the only reason some reduce this is if you have a company car or cash allowance.

There is nothing "illegal" about what they do, but its morally questionable and I would challange it if i were you.

  6. i work for a small non profit support agency! we havent had the wage increase this year so the boss has taken the rise through the back door and risen our petrol milage from 36p per mile to 40p per mile!

I think its disgusting that you dont get the full amount as petrol increases surely dictate that you need to have more coming in to get you to work ( FOR THEM)

if you have a HR department try talking to them about it and ask for everything in writing. that way if the company are being sneaky, its a good bet they havent officially documented it into policy!

Dont be afraid to ask for things in writing, you have a right to know!

    good luck!

  7. The taxman says that for the first 10,000 miles you can claim 40p per mile using your car on business. After this the rate comes down.

If your company only pays 18p then:-

    1. This is woefully low!

    2. You will be able to claim back the difference from the taxman!

  8. don't know if it's legal but it's immoral tell them you want the full 40p because you can't run your car on 18p argos in the eighties paid 39p a mile so 20 years on 40p isn't a lot
