  1. Lightening. It is what causes thunder.

Looks like I win since you never asked which is faster!

  2. Lightining, then thunder.

  3. lighing because it faster than sound look in the sky

  4. lighting happens first and the sound of then lighting is actually the thunder but it happens so much later because the speed of light travels faster than the speed of sound that is why u can tel how far away the lighting is from you by how long it takes.

    =^..^=

  5. See dude, as everyone knows, light travels much much much faster than the speed of sound. So eventually, lightning is seen first and thunder is heard later. And another thing here is, lightning and thunder is created at the same time because lightning sparks out when heavy cloud molecules clash with each other due to uneven wind and the sound (thunder) is created by the sudden spark of the lightning and the clash of the cloud molecules.

  6. lightning because light travels faster than sound =]

  7. lightning because the speed of light is faster than sound

  8. Lightning is excess electrons jumping. This creates a vacuum. The thunder is the air falling into the void the vacuum created. I'm a science teacher and have been for 16 years. There are many different types of lightning...the most exciting is ground to cloud lightning, where the electrons are attracted to the protons in the ground. Law of Electrostatics...

  9. Lightning is basically the light given off by the electrons travelling from a charged cloud to an oppositely charged object (e.g. a tree or an unfortunate individual) thunder is the sound given off by the blast. As light moves faster than sound you see the light from the thunder storm before you hear it. So it the light that gets to you first.

  10. If you looked at a lightening flash in a storm, you could find out for yourself.

They both occur at the same time, but it takes longer for the thunder to travel to your ears than the lightening to reach your eyes.

Light travels at 186,000 miles per second. Sound travels at about 775 MPH. Light travels millions of times faster than sound ,so you see the flash first, then you wait, depending upon how far away you are, and hear the thunder second.

  11. Lightning. Light moves faster than sound, so you'll see the lightning then hear it, which is the thunder. If you see and hear lightning at the same time, you probably shouldn't leave your house. The storm's right on top of you.

  12. lightning. light travels faster than anything, so when there is a thunder storm, the lightning will always hit first, followed by the thunder.

  13. lightning comes first and it is an arc of electrcity that runs through the air and goes from the ground to the clouds in the sky; this arc of electricity heats the air around it to an extreme degree and this then creates a very loud boom or pop from the quick heating of the air like a firecracker

  14. Lightning

  15. Lighting comes first then the thunder....  Because the speed of light is a lot faster then the speed of sound...

  16. All of the above answers are right. The speed of Light is faster than sound.  When you hear the thunder it is too late ...

    the lightning already struck something.

  17. it's lightning for sure because light is way faster than sound it travels with a speed of 300000000 meters per second!!! that's a lot!!! and sound is slower I don't remember the exact speed but I think is about 250 miles per hour....

If you're close to the spot where it happens you see it as if they were simultaneous, but when you are far from the place then you really see the diference

  18. do you believe yet its lighting.

  19. Lightning since light travels much faster than sound. So you'll see lightning first and then hear thunder
