  1. I think there are about sixteen and I think it is only the King of Tonga that is now an absolute Monarch.

  2. There are currently 45 monarchy nations in the world, and 16 of which are Commonwealth Realms that formally recognize Queen Elizabeth II as their head of state and Prince Charles as heir.

Only four nations in the world is ruled by an "absolute monarchy." Absolute monarchy is a monarchical form of government where the monarch has the power to rule his or her land or state and its citizens freely, with some laws or legally-organized direct opposition in force. Although some religious authority may be able to discourage the monarch from some acts and the sovereign is expected to act according to custom, in an absolute monarchy there is no constitution or body of law above what is decreed by the sovereign (king or queen). As a theory of civics, absolute monarchy puts total trust in well-bred and well-trained monarchs raised for the role from birth.

Note: The remaining 41 monarchy nations are ruled by a "constitutional monarchy." A constitutional monarchy or limited monarchy is a form of government established under a constitutional system which acknowledges an elected or hereditary monarch as head of state. Most constitutional monarchies take on a parliamentary form, like the United Kingdom, Canada or Japan, where the monarch may be regarded as the head of state but the prime minister, whose power derives directly or indirectly from elections, is head of government.

  3. I think the UK, Denmark and Thailand are just to name a few. But they are not absolute monarchies. They have parliaments, too.

  4. Some middle east countries have monarchs with a fair bit of power.

  5. England, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Thailand, Japan, China, Monaco, Nigeria, I guess.

  6. The ones I know that are monarchies are Brunei, Saudi Arabia, Japan and the UK. There are tons of others including all of europe's.

  7. To Legendary Strum Guardian's answer.... China and Nigeria are NOT monarchies... please get your facts right.

China's government is a socialist republic and Nigeria's is a Presidential Federal republic...

There are 45 monarchies in the world.... 4 of which are absolute monarchies.

  8. Pain is right. I have to add there are still deposed/extinct lines who still use royal titles, but they mean less then those who are still reigning. Princess Caroline of Monaco is married to Prince Ernst of Hanover (a throne that no longer exists ). There is also a Queen of the Maori nations in New Zealand

  9. In Europe alone there are 12 Monarchies (Kingdoms and Principalities) although four of them are very small (indeed two of them are two of the three remaining city-states in the world - Monaco and Vatican City).

In the world in total there are 45 monarchies of which 5 are absolute - Brunei, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Swaziland, Vatican City. Of these 45, sixteen share the same Head of State -HM Queen Elizabeth II.

In April the number will reduce by one when Nepal becomes a Republic.

There are also 14 monarchies where the monarch is head of their nation but not Head of state e.g. the head of the Maori people is a King but not Head Of New Zealand.

  10. Can I add my house hold. There is one royally pain in the back side Queen bee and boy do I let the others know I am Queen.
