It holds the throttle at a steady position to keep the car at a certain speed. It's nice on long trips and good for mileage.  Just don't use it in rain or snow.  It can cause problems.

Unless you have a "Hot Foot" installed on your boat Or are running a PWC then all boats have a "cruise" on the throttle. Wherever you put the throttle it stays till you pull back or push up.

On a motorboat, cruise control will hold the throttle and rudder/prop direction the same. On a sailing boat cruise control is a motorised minicomputer that will move the tiller for you to keep you going in the same direction
