i am sure it is something really stupid but to attract media attention... my question is: what is Gimelstob's claim of fame anyway? i don't recall him won anything major? all i remember was his out of control sweating and long matches end up losing... what makes him qualify to comment on the games?

  1. Kournikova makes sexual remarks about herself all the time -except in a nonverbal way; so what if Gimby said the same thing out loud.

Kournikova is an embarassment to women athletes everywhere.

  2. He made sexual explicit remarks about her.

His claim to fame is he is known for diving around on the court. That is how I know him anyway.

  3. Gimelstob made sexual remarks about Kournikova and other female players on a Washington radio program The Junkies, before heading to Wimbledon.

Gimelstob called Kournikova the "b-word" and made sexually-charged remarks about Kournikova and his brother. Gimelstob apologized on the WTT website Wednesday, the day of his suspension.

    Gimelstob's claim to fame:

He won the 1998 Australian Open and French Open mixed doubles titles with Venus Williams as his partner. In singles matches, he has defeated Andre Agassi ,Petr Korda, Alex Corretja,Patrick Rafter, and Gustavo Kuerten

Still, that was very inapropriate of him and dumb to say those comments.

  4. Here are some of the things Gimelstob said about Kournikova.

Asked what he thought of her:

"She's a *****... Hate's a very strong word. I just despise her to the maximum level just below hate."

Asked if he would date her:

"I have no attraction to her because she's such a douche. I really have no interest in her ... I wouldn't mind having my younger brother, who's a kind of a stud, nail her and then reap the benefits of that. She has a great body but her face is a five (out of ten)."

Asked about playing WTT against her:

'If she's not crying by the time she walks off the court then I did not do my job."

    What he said afterward:

"I am extremely disappointed in myself," Gimelstob said in the statement. "I take full responsibility for all the words that came out of my mouth ... Anna Kournikova, World Team Tennis and many others deserve my deepest apologies.

"I recognize that my access to communicate to the public should be used in a positive way, and this was clearly not the case last week."

Gimelstob was a mediocre player who never really amounted to much on the pro tour. He's best known for his kamikaze style play where he would go leaping after balls.

He is a bit of a smooth talker though and has since been hired to do some tennis commentary.

Sure it was dumb to say what he said, especially publicly.

What could he have been thinking?
