What do We Progressives do ?

We're in a tight spot, we've got Obama with "Non" licensed, Lobby money coming out of his ears (anybody check the runway last night..Looked like a who's who of Corp sponsors..Like a NASCAR race, or WWF) Then we get Joe Biden, the chief architect behind the "no Bankruptcy" legislature, as his son is consulting for "MBNA" a major credit card company ????? And both of them having voted in favor of war spending every time, except Obama once, which he has used countless times to point to his disapproval of the Iraq Invasion, and yet..he wants to do a swap, ..to Afghanistan with a troop build up.

Every time he panders to the rights agenda he loses a little more of his lead, where as if he just stuck to his Progressive rhetoric that got him where he is he'd be leading by at least 20 points ?

If we vote for Nader, McKinney, or even Paul... we've voted our conscience, but If McSame gets in, we're liable to end up in a new cold war, and most certainly will "Bomb bomb bomb, Bomb bomb Iran"

So, do we Vote for Omama and Biden by default ?

  1. word.  There's a lot I'm not crazy about with Obama/Biden, but simultaneously, I'm not sure If i want to vote third party.  It's a tough call, and I probably won't have my mind made up until I walk into the booth.

  2. I'm voting Libertarian this time.  Vote for Bob Barr and your conscience will not trouble you as much as if you voted for McCain or Obama.

  3. i agree with your analysis, especially about obama's slide to the right.  he had a good thing going; who would have known so many in america were ready to take up the progressive banner?  as mentioned above, one of these guys will win; not any third party candidate.  so, it's obama or mcShame.  i gotta hang with the new kid.

as i've grown older, i've come to the conclusion that it's always a choice of the lesser of two evils in choosing presidents.  good guys just don't make it.  so, it's barack obama or a wannabe warlord.  i've had my fill of war.

  4. To be honest, I'm not seeing a big difference between the two main candidates or their parties at this point. I think it's important to remember that politicians are not our saviors. They bend to pressure from the public: pressure which often has its origins in grassroots movements. Do you think LBJ would have hurried the Civil Rights Act through Congress and signed it so quickly if not for public pressure? For real change you can believe in, just look in the mirror.

  5. Assume the crash position, head between your knees

  6. i too find myself in a similar situation as you but i will be voting for obama. if you've been following the polls at all, his winning is not even close to being guaranteed. and as distasteful as it may be to compromise, i honestly think that it's important to recognize that either mccain or obama will win and that even one person can affect the situation (especially if you live in a battleground state). i know plenty of anarchists who refuse to vote on principal but i think this is a wrongheaded approach because even if you don't vote and mccain gets elected, things will be worse than if obama gets elected - the policies of the government affect you and your community even if you choose to ignore them. since one of the two of them will win, i think that it's time for the left to "circle the wagons" (for a change ;)) and make sure that we don't end up with wider class inequality (mccain's hatred of the poor is practically palpable), more international conflicts, and a continued militaristic attitude toward governance. i think that all leftists can agree that they would prefer these things to not happen and then we must ask ourselves which one of the two people who will definitely become the president is more likely to deal with them in some way - however shallow that "dealing with" might be. in the end, if you continue your local organizing work for the issues you believe in, then you can rest easy knowing that you compromised just a little bit to keep mccain out of office :P
