  1. Japanese breakfast consists of steamed rice, miso (soy bean paste) soup, and side dishes. Common side dishes are grilled fish, rolled omelet, pickles, dried seaweed, natto, salad, and more. Actually, you can make any dishes to go with rice and miso soup in Japanese breakfast. As you see in the photo, it's an etiquette to place a bowl of rice on your left and to place a bowl of miso soup on your right side at the table.

    Steamed Rice

    Hot steamed rice is the most important dish in Japanese-style breakfast. Usually it's plain without any seasoning.

    Miso soup

    Common ingrediednts are tofu, green onion, seaweed, and so on.*miso soup with tofu recipe

    Natto (fermented soy beans)

    Purchase a pack of natto and place it in a bowl. Add some soy sauce and karashi mustard and stir well. Place the natto on top of steamed rice and eat natto and rice together.

    Nori (dried seaweed)

    Dip a strip of nori in soy sauce and roll some rice with it and eat.

    Tamagoyaki (Rolled omelet)Put a little bit of soy sauce to eat.

    Grilled fish

    Grill salted salmon or dried horse mackerel (aji).

    Pickles

    Pickled daikon radish, cucumber,  cabbage, or umeboshi (sour plum) is served. To make simple pickles, slice a cucumber thinly and cut 1/4 head of cabbage into bite-sized pieces. Place the vegetables in a bowl and add 1/2 tablespoon of salt and mix well. Leave them overnight. Before serving, squeeze the begetables softly to remove some salt.
