  2. Welcome to guatamala Antigua

Welcome to Don Pedro de Alvarado Spanish School!

    «25 years of excellence»

    http://www.donpedrospanishschool.com

We are committed to teaching Spanish in one on one classes in order to reach total immersion. The Guatemalan culture, a variety of activities, a familiar atmosphere and lots of fun is an important part of our schools policy.

We are looking forward to having you here with us!

Don Pedro de Alvarado Spanish School is located in Antigua Guatemala, Central America's most interesting and fascinating city. The school is specialized in private Spanish language instruction with a 1-on-1 student/teacher ratio that can be arranged on a 4 or 6 hours per day basis (5 days a week).

The majority of our teachers went to university and speaks English. Almost all of them have taught for at least 5 years and each one is trained and qualified to teach Spanish as a foreign language.

The student is given a new instructor every week in order to provide a great variety of learning experiences. The school offers more than just an ordinary linguistic program found in other institutions. We provide courses that are specially geared to the individual students' needs.

Students progress at their personal speed and are not slowed down by conventional methods. We offer them an opportunity to concentrate on speaking, writing or reading abilities or a combination of the three. The teachers are accustomed to teaching beginners as well as intermediate and advanced students from all over the world.

Unlike conventional programs, the classes are held in a variety of locations with the Guatemalan people themselves, such as in parks, town squares, markets, cafes, colonial ruins etc. In all cases the student decides where he would like to study and what he would like to see following his private instructor's initial orientation.

One week of studies consists of 5 days of classes and 2 days of rest. During the weekend the student gets the opportunity to explore the surroundings of Antigua and other parts of Guatemala. This can be done in a group, but also individually.

Usually classes are held between Monday and Friday. If you wish you may also receive classes on Saturdays. The student can choose to take his/her lessons either in the morning (8:00 am – 12:00 pm) or in the afternoon (2:00 pm – 6:00 pm).

You may take FSI and ACTFL foreign proficiency exams that can help you to obtain employment and/or university credits.

We are looking forward to having you here with us!

  3. Guatemala is a beautifule country that everyone should visit at least once.  Crime is a problem, but like the US, if you use common sense, you shouldn't have any problems.  Travel during the day is a must.  Travel after dark can be dangerous.  I've visted twice and spent bout 1 month there and loved every second of it.  I would travel between November and February when it's not the rainy season.  In rural areas mudslides can happen during the rainy season.

Here are a few places you need to visit:

Lago Atitlan (a lake surrounded by 3 volcanoes. There are several villages around the lake, the main tourist spot is Panajachel. Another is San Lucas Toliman.

Semuc Champey. It takes a while to get there, but you won’t be disappointed. I’m planning on going down there this later this year for my 3rd visit.  Semuc Champey (a series of lagoons formed on a rock ledge over river that goes underground for 1/4 mile).

    Tikal (Mayan Ruins) http://mayaruins.com/tikal.html

Antigua (Colonial City) http://www.aroundantigua.com and http://antiguadailyphoto.com/

Antigua daily photo is run by Rudy Giron.  He is a very nice person and can give you tips on where to go in Antigua.

Some other places you may want to go are Puerto Barrios, Rio Dulce, Flores, Peten, Chichicastenango, Lago Izabel, Coban, Monterrico, Quetzaltenango and various places throughout Guatemala City. Enjoy the trip.

While you are going around the country here’s a website for lesser known hotels that are nice cheap stays.

  4. Very BEAUTIFUL

in Antigua, you will see MANY volcanos in Guatemala on the way to Antigua. Very mountainous country with over 35 volcanos, and I think 3 active volcanos.

Sadly, though, if you go to Guatemala City, you HAVE to stay with people who you KNOW, and who know YOU! It is a VERY dangerous place to live because of the gangs! That city has one of the highest murder rates of all Latin-America, and one of the highest crime rates. Guatemala doesn't mess around with the gangs there. If they kidnap anyone, the police there will kill every one involved in the kidnapping, on site. There are many people who get robbed by someone who will come to them first asking for directions to some place, and then they get a gun pulled on them.

You CAN have FUN here, IF you stay safe, and STAY WIH PEOPLE YOU KNOW!!

  5. it's right next to El Salvador.

  6. Guatemala is a beautiful country. It has many wonderful things to visit- check out fodor's for the site seeing. Dress more conservatively and more formally than the US- Think of European style of dress.  Guatemala has a lot for adventurers but it's cities offer a lot for the less adventure some. When you go be respectful of the culture, enjoy it and ask questions. We enjoyed the Mayan Ruins, Antigua and Guatemala City. Food is good, music is wonderful, countryside is breathtaking. But the best thing Guatemala has to offer is the people. You will enjoy excellent service wherever you go. Guatemalans are gracious and courteous. Guatemalan men are Chivalrous. The Flowers are fragrant- the weather fabulous (except rainy season). Go to Guatemala... you'll never want to leave. In fact, I wish I was there now.
