What does hot commodity mean?

like if you are selling an item and everybody wonts that particular item, then it would become hot

It's something considered to be in strong demand.  In business, a hot commodity might be something really hard to get (low supply) because demand is so high; for example, some unique software.  In the reference you mention, it means almost the same thing... that you better act now before somebody else does!
