  1. It was terrible.

She came in second and the race had ended but they were still running and all and she tripped, fell, and broke both her front ankles. You couldn't even see it on camera. They had to euthanize her immediately.

    May she rest and peace.

she ran her heart out. a true champion.

  2. broke both ankles and they had to put her down.. it was so sad.

  3. After she won second place she tripped when she was running to cool down after the race and broke her front ankles.

they put her down her right after the accident.

it was horrible to watch her fall. may she rest in peace

  4. After finishing in second she went around the turn and broke down with two broken front ankles. She was euthanized directly on the track as the vet said nothing could be done. It's such a tragedy and my sympathy goes to her owners and trainers. The whole mood of the race went from joyous to absolutely sad in one move.

  5. She broke both her front ankles and could not stand so they

    put her down.

  6. She got stress fractures that blew her ankles apart on both front legs. She ran her heart out and it was sick and sad. She never stumbled or tripped causing the fractures. She went down BECAUSE of the breaks..

  7. After finishing second in the Kentucky Derby, Eight Belles broke both ankles. According to track veterinarian Larry Bramlage, the fracture in Eight Belles' left front ankle opened the skin (which infected her wound with track dirt), and one of her sesamoid bones was broken.

When a horse has a leg injury they are unlikely to recover, just as Barbaro never recovered from his broken leg. Since Eight Belles suffered an injury to both legs which also broke the skin (unlike Barbaro's injury), there was no hope for her to survive and she was euthanized so she would not suffer from a painful injury that she would never recover from.

  8. They didn't say that she tripped and broke her ankles.... After the race, the horses ease up and gallop to slow down and then walk around.  As the jockey eased up and stood up, he felt her galloping funny so he really slowed her down.... Eight Belles collapsed and the jockey slid off.  Poor Eight Belles had broken both front ankles. This is an injury that they felt was too severe and they had to euthanize her right away on the track.  They don't know EXACTLY what happened...only that it occured AFTER the race and that it occured while she was slowing down.  She ran a beautiful race- I bet on her to win it!!! I wish this didn't have to happen to her..... when it happened all I thought to myself....This is like Barbaro all over again :(
