What exactly is OpenOffice?

I just started some on-line courses at the local community college and I need something that can open microsoft word and microsoft excel files/templates. Someone told me open office is free and can do this? Is this true?

  1. Yes, it's true, it's an open source project, OpenOffice.org is the site, download it from there.


  2. It is not microsoft word as somebody posted but it has the same components as the ms office suite except it is open source and free.  

  3. Yep. OpenOffice is the free version of Microsoft Word
