  1. A countess is the wife of an earl or a countess in her own right. She is a member of the peerage,titles handed down through the generations.Peerage titles wer given as gifts/payment for services rendered to the monarch.At one time,in the UK, a peerage title guaranteed the title holder a seat in The House of Lords in Parliament.

    In order of precedence(importance) the peerage titles are:Duke/Duchess,Marquess/Marchioness,

    Earl/Countess,Baron/Baroness.
