relate the chemical structure of an enzyme to its specificity and catalytic activity

I believe the answer is somewhere along the lines of Catalase is present in the cells of fungi, plants and animals.

Hydrogen peroxide is poisonous and is a dangerous waste product of many different biochemical reactions that occur in our cells. Our cells produce the enzyme catalase which decomposes hydrogen peroxide to water and oxygen. Catalase operates very quickly – one molecule of catalase can break down 40 million hydrogen peroxide molecules a second.

Is this right or whats up?

  1. I believe your proposed answer is way too specific. I think the answer is supposed to be more like this.

    Enzymes are long peptide chains that happen to have specific three-dimensional arranges, that are the ones that give that particular enzyme the specific kind of molecule that it can interact with, because it's with the abailable surface that the enzyme presents that it makes contact with the other molecule.

    The statement above is proved as true because if an enzyme happens to have any sort of post-traductional modification (like a sulfur bond, or an added glucose or the like) that modifies the structure of it, the enzyme will not have catalytic activity, even though the peptide chain remains the same, if that specific modification is not at the place that it's supposed to be

    Now that I think more about it, I belive your first answer was semi-right, you just had to add what the guy/girl above me said, and what you wrote, and what I said. Just combine the three of them (making more enfasis on the catalitic sites that the girl/guy said and the post-traductional modifications that I told you about), and you'll get a great answer =D

    Catalase is a tetramer of four polypeptide chains, each over 500 amino acids long. It contains four porphyrin heme (iron) groups ( 4 active sites) which allow the enzyme to react with the hydrogen peroxide very quickly.

  3. Enzymes are specific to a single metabolic process.  The conformity of the enzyme is defined by its chemical structure.  The peptide chain forming the protein is the chemical structure. You're answer is too specific because although catalase is an enzyme the question is not referring to catalase rather the catalytic activity of enzymes as a whole.  In your answer you may choose to use catalase as an example but be sure to mention the conformity and chemical structure of catalase is what allows it to catalyze hydrogen peroxide.
