  1. Big earthquake (7.8) about a week ago in central China (Chengdu) area, specifically Sichuan lasting several minutes - I think it was in the am - lots of kids were in school at the time;  50,000 + people killed and many more missing under crushed buildings - lots & lots more now without homes and living in tents.  If that is not enough, aftershocks yesterday (5.6) in same area  killed a few more and destroyed like 70,000 more homes.   A terrible, terrible disaster!

  2. The quake was so huge that it covered all of China.  They are still having after shocks. Deaths and injuries are in the thousands and thousands.  For good details of the extent, I suggest you check out the news on the Internet.   MSNBC usually has good commentaries on things of this type.

  3. The earthquake happened on May 12, 2008 around 2:28pm at China's time. It happend on Sichuan provience closed to Chengdu city. The earthquake was initially reported as 7.8, then corrected to 8.0. The demage to Chengdu city is not too deadly as far as I heard, but it is very deadly to the countryside areas. (Buildings in Chengdu city are modern building that is strong enough to survive, and it still have some distance to the center of the quake. But houses people built in countryside are not. Some villiages or towns near the center of the quake were completely destroyed. Highways and railroads to those area were destroyed as well.)

So far, the death toll is already over 67,000 confirmed death with another 20,000 some missing. The expected death toll could rise to 90,000 in a few days because to the missing people.

    - China government was doing an excellent job in saving people's life this time. Over 100,000 troops sent to the area. China's lead were on site to mange the rescue. If you read the news, you really felt they did whatever they can do.

    - The aftershock still continues in the area today.

    - May 19 at 2:28pm. The country had a 3 minutes of silence for the respect and saddness to the death. (I was in Guangzhou that day. Even the subway was stopped for 3 minutes. All traffic and cars were stopped at those 3 minutes. People get out of their work.) From May 19 to 21, all entertainment things were closed for 3 days (no TV, no online games, no disco.)
