What happened to my lawnmower?

i hit a metal pole hidden in the grass with my pushmower, it went dead i pulled the cord and it started right back up i started cutting the grass then it started making a funny rattling sound so i shut it off. when i tried to crank the lawn mower back up the motor wouldn't even try to turn over

  1. Most likely you broke the connecting rod that is attached to the cylinder head.  Time for a new mower bud.   To fix that one, would cost more than a whole new mower.


  2. You might have bent the blade and/or damaged the blade adapter.  You should remove these and inspect them. If the blade is bent, replace it.  When you hit something there is a key between the flywheel and the crankshaft that shears to reduce the load on the internal engine parts.  You will have to remove the engine cowling and the flywheel nut to see if the key is sheared.  If the key way in the flywheel is not aligned with the key way in the crankshaft the key is sheared.  It is possible that you broke something internal but I would check the blade and key first.

  3. you might haev broken a tooth or teeth on the gears that link the crank and cam shafts and got lucky the first pull.

    that would be bad.
