My wife will be filing the N-400 application for US citizenship next week. After that what happens? Does she need to study for a test? How does she request a test date? How soon could she take the test?

  1. It's actually 60% (6 out of 10) of questions that an applicant needs to answer correctly.

  2. Try getting the info packet from legalusresident.com.

  3. Once your wife send N-400, USCIS first mail the Receipt Notice. Then the Biometric appointment notice will be sent for her to take fingerprints and pictures at the USCIS Service Center in your jurisdiction. Then USCIS will send her Interview date for her to come to review her applications, records. She cannot request the date.

On the interview day, she will be given English and US Civics tests. She needs to pass these proficiency tests to get citizenship approval. If everything is in order and she pass the tests, 80% of correct answers required to pass, she will be given oral approval. Then USCIS will mail her the Oath Ceremony date. After she takes an oath and sworn into, she becomes US Citizen and she can apply for the US passport.
