  1. I was on a jury a few years ago in Ireland. I don't know if the same legalities apply, but they should be similar.

There is a lot of sitting around, waiting, so I advise you to bring a book or something to keep you occupied. There are always several more jurors called than needed. You are known by number.  When I was on duty, they arrainged the first case before they chose the jury members, I don't know if this is the standard practice. The jury members are then selected on a "lottery" style basis. If and when you are called, each legal team can reject you for any reason at all. If you are chosen, you are sworn in there and then.

When the case begins, there can be a lot of moving in and out of a sequestered room, as there could be legal issues that arise that the jury won't be allowed to hear. The judge will have asked the jury to choose a head juror who effectivley is the spokesperson for the group. When I was on a jury, and they broke for lunch, we were escorted by a police woman. It was quite surreal!

When the case draws to a close, you will be asked to come to a verdict and the head juror will read that verdict.

The good news is that you will be exempt for seven years.

If you want to get out of it, the only way is if you get a letter from your employer saying your presence at work is imperative to the running of the business, although employers are obliged to let you go on duty.

If you are studying and cannot miss class, then you need proof of that.

If you are going to be out of the country, also proof of flights ect.

Or, in the particular case that you may be called for, then if you know the accused, then you can say it at the time.

Good luck! It's quite an interesting experience.

  2. U show up at the court house on time and wait until they call you. U may not be picked so don't panic. Your employer is strange for being mad at you for doing your civic duty. However, your employer can't do anything to you while you are on jury duty.
