What is 20% larger than 260? ?

the question is.... next years sixth grade class is 20% larger than this years class of graduating eigth graders. if 260 eigth graders are graduating, how big is the incoming sixth grade class?

100% of 260=260, right?  And 20% is one-fifth of 100%, right?   So just divide 260 by 5 to find 20% (20% of anything is 1/5th of it!) and you get  260 / 5 = 52.   Add 52 to 260, and you get 312 students.

Instead of giving you the answer, I will help explain.  20% is 20/100, or 1/5 bigger, so all you need to do is divide 260 by 5 and add that to 260 for your answer.  If you can't do that with a calculator, my answering the question for you would actually do more harm than good.
