Blu Ray is the HD media format backed by Sony. Its competitor is HD DVD, which is backed by Toshiba and Microsoft. Both are a disc much like a DVD, that are read by blue lasers instead of red. Blu Ray can hold 25 GB single layer and 50 GB double layer.

The name Blu-ray Disc is derived from the blue-violet laser used to read and write this type of disc. Because of its shorter wavelength (405 nm), substantially more data can be stored on a Blu-ray Disc than on the DVD format, which uses a red (650 nm) laser. Blu-Ray Disc, or BD, is an optical disc like DVD or CD but with a much higher capacity and bit-rate. It gets it's name from the blue laser it uses to  read the information on the disk. Blu-Ray disc is also the format that PS3 is based on and of coarse PS3 does play BD movies.

Blu-Ray competes with HD DVD which is similar in looks and function but has a little less capacity.
