  1. You know, your question "what is Kierkegaard" is about as philosophical as questions get (dealing with essence, existence, the self, or just simply objects in space and time...).

However, Kierkegaard is a name for a who, as some have pointed out. Søren Aabye Kierkegaard, was a philospher whose work crossed the boundaries of philosophy, theology, psychology, literary criticism, devotional literature and fiction. He is known by some as the "father of existentialism". His works contributed to the development of modernism, and some of his most fervent attempts were to analyze and revitalize Christian faith (for example his book "Fear and Trembling").

  2. Kerrkegaard is not a what but a who because that is a person's name. To read more about this interesting and influential thinker, see wikipedia, for a start.

  3. Yeah, and what does it protect?

  4. Kierkegaard was a philosopher and prolific writer.  He is considered an existentialist.
