Macrophages surround and eat foreign substances that cause infections.  Basically they respond when a person is exposed to an illness.  They destroy the bacteria, cancer cells or viruses that get into the body.

Macrophages (Greek: "big eaters", from makros "large" + phagein "eat") (mø[1]) are cells within the tissues that originate from specific white blood cells called monocytes. Monocytes and macrophages are phagocytes, acting in both non-specific defense (or innate immunity) as well as specific defense (or cell-mediated immunity) of vertebrate animals. Their role is to phagocytose (engulf and then digest) cellular debris and pathogens either as stationary or mobile cells, and to stimulate lymphocytes and other immune cells to respond to the pathogen.

Macrophages are cells that are part of the immune system. They engulf pathogens (foreign particles, ie bacteria or viruses). After they engulf the pathogen they display antigens that Helper T Cells then identify and are able to call upon the appropriate Killer T Cells and antibodies.

MICROPHAGES- are white blood cells that attach foreign substances, infectious microbes, and cancer cells through destruction and ingestion.

They are cells in the blood that are first fighters against germs tumors ..and the like that are invading your body . . . darn good  friends to have . .lol
