    n.

The process by which rocks are altered in composition, texture, or internal structure by extreme heat, pressure, and the introduction of new chemical substances.

    metamorphism  (mt-môrfzm)

The process by which rocks are changed in composition, texture, or structure by extreme heat and pressure. In prograde metamorphism metamorphic rocks that were formed under low pressure and temperature conditions undergo a second metamorphic event in which they are exposed to higher pressures and temperatures. In retrograde metamorphism metamorphic rocks that were formed under high pressure and temperature conditions undergo a second metamorphic event in which they are exposed to lower pressures and temperatures. metamorphism

    1. the process of change in the form and structure of rocks by the agency of heat, water, and pressure.

    2. the change of particular types of rock, as limestone into marble. Also called epigenesis. See also change. — metamorphic, adj.

  4. META ACTUALLY MEANS  "WITH" OR "AFTER"

and in english prefixes it is normally used in the sense "after" or "post"

meta morphism literally means "after change"

  5. Metamorphsim is the solid state alteration of rocks due to changes in the temperature and pressure conditions.  A metamorphic deposit is one which is formed by metamorphic processes.  In some cases, low grade rocks recrystallising at higher temperatures, will give off fluids which can carry ore minerals and concentrate them in veins, making a mineral deposit.  Another kind of metamorphic deposit is formed by the alteration of calc-silicate rocks by late stage fluids emanating from a cooling pluton - these are known as skarns.

  6. The word "Metamorphism" comes from the Greek: Meta = change, Morph = form, so metamorphism means to change form.

used often in geology as it refers to rocks.

Metamorphism can be defined as the solid state recrystallisation of pre-existing rocks due to changes in heat and/or pressure and/or introduction of fluids i.e without melting. There will be mineralogical, chemical and crystallographic changes.

Metamorphism produced with increasing pressure and temperature conditions is known as prograde metamorphism. Conversely, decreasing temperatures and pressure characterize retrograde metamorphism.
