What is Scotland like?

Im an american girl, 17years old. Some day I would love to travel to Scotland, what is it like?

what is scotland like? Well I'm scottish - From the grampian region. Lived here forever! Grandparents tell me its one of the most beautiful places in the world but when you live here you take it for granted every day. And no its not just full of hills.

When i go abroad there will be people i will meet randomly that say "oh i love scottish people". I can only describe it as safe. You have to live or visit here to really experience it to be honest.

The country side is beautiful. It really is. The nightlife is wild.

Visit the highlands ;)

Depend on the area of Scotland, the best part is the west coast, the scenery is spectacular, the beaches are white sands with crystal clear aquamarine waters. The islands, such as Mull and Iona are quite spectacular.

However no visit to Scotland would be complete without a trip to Edinburgh, it's such a vibrant city with so much to see and so.

Scotland is sparsely populated. It's as big as England but only has a tenth of the population. Outside of the main cities and tourist centres there's lots of wild, open, extremely beautiful countryside.

Scotland also has some great cities and towns with lots to see and do - places like Glasgow, Aberdeen, Edinburgh, St Andrews, Inverness. I don't share an earlier answerer's view that the east coast is unpleasant. Dundee is a little rough around the edges, but most of the rest is nice and St. Andrews in particular is lovely.

Scotland is well served by public transport (buses, trains) and even some fairly remote places have a frequent train service.

People in Scotland (and Britain as a whole) tend to exaggerate how bad the weather is. It's really quite moderate by American standards, not too warm or too cold.

People also exaggerate how bad the food is. You can eat very well in the major towns and cities, and even in fairly rural places it's almost always possible to get a nutritious meal. Yes, there are lots of fast food places offering deep fried everything but you don't have to go there.

Well I live in the capital and it is beautiful. We have the friendliest people you will find. Also if you would like to see some amazing scenery then Scotland is definately the place to come.

Scotland has many, many beautiful places.  Lots of history and the people are very welcoming and friendly.

I am English but have frequently been to Scotland on holiday.  Also my eldest son studied at the University of Edinburgh so that city is one that I have frequently visited.

If you want to see wonderful beaches and  would say go to the islands around the Scottish coast and see the wonderful sights and scenery of the isles.  My own favourites are the Orkney islands to the north.

White sand, miles of it, solitude and if it is a sunny day then, blue sea that could rival the Caribbean!!!!!!!!!!!! Also there are many really interesting places and features on Orkney itself.

The Churchill Barrier is one. Scapa Flow is where the Royal Navy had their war ship in WW2.

There is a little chapel built by Italian prisoners of war during WW2, said to have been made from whatever scrap they could find, including corned beef tins. Inside it is beautiful with lovely art work done by one of the prisoners.

Then there is Scara Brae, A wondrous Neolithic site,

I understand why you would ask about Scotland, if you have never been there. Scotland has some wild rugged scenery and maybe one would expect the coastline to be the same. In some places it is, but there are lovely beaches too. Take a look at these pics on the links I have found for you.

very diverse i live in Glasgow and it is just like any other big city in the uk! but once you get out into the country side its beautiful honestly iv never seen a more beautiful country than my own!

Well the highlands are just beautiful i would visit the Isle of Skye and basically any where in the highlands and Grampians mountains for some spectacular scenery. Mostly the people are friendly and kind to foreigners. Places to visit loch lomond the west highland way, loch ness, loch fyne. Places to avoid , most of the east coast is very dirty and so unpleasant Glasgow, Dundee, (horrible). The food i have to say is horrendous! Scottish idea of haute cuisine being scampi and chips!  That's not saying that you cant find some delightful food but you will pay through the nose for it.

Like every other country it has rough and smooth. Choose to visit the nice parts and you'll love it. The Islands are well worth the effort it takes to get there.
