What is a Collegiate?

I'm still confused about this. In the area I live in, there is a "collegiate" and it's exactly like a high school - grades 9-12, sports teams, clubs and everything. The other high schools are just simply called "high school" or "secondary school". What does "Collegiate" mean and What's the difference between it and a high school/secondary school?

  1. Check your dictionary and you will learn that collegiate is an adjective, not a noun.  Therefore nothing is called a collegiate, but this word may modify a noun.  For example, you can speak of a collegiate experience.
