A person who hangs out at the beach a lot. They usually are a surfer, wear surfer clothes (like pacsun , billabong). And if they are white, they are usuallly really tan. Laid back personality. Nice person.

A beach bum is a counter culture type individual who is "generally speaking" a surfer and/or a stoner. They usually either have very little money or a wealthy family; live within walking distance to the ocean; enjoy "happy" time music like Jimmy Buffett, Dave Mason, Tom Petty, Punk Rock, new music.

They are considered "locals" at their beach and know all the local restaurants, hotels and places tourists should go to or avoid.
