  1. something that counters the effects of magnetism.  Typically, an older TV set needed to be degaussed periodically to offset the electrical charges caused by the electrons hitting the picture tube.


  2. On ships it was used to counter the magnetic effects in the metal that would attract mines and alter navigation gear.  It was degaussing.
