What is a ditch?

Talking about the kind when there's a tornado.

It's a depression in the ground, just as others have said.  

But the reason to dive into it should a tornado approach (barring better protection, of course) is that you are less likely to be struck by flying debris.  That 2x4 from the house that the tornado just tore up is likely to fly over your head, and not conk you in the noggin.

philosophically speaking, when does a depressionin the ground becomes a hole?  how shallow and or/short is a ditch when compared to a depression? when does a ditch become trench? or a trench become a valley??

tornadoically speaking, a ditch tends to be a depression immediately outside of a roadway, just deep and wide enough for an adult body to lay lower than the surface of the roadway and the land on the other side of the ditch...

A groove lower than ground level and can be narrow and shallow or deep and wide.  With regards to a tornado, it does not dip down into a ditch (no one knows why), but will pass over it.  This is why it is recommended to get into a ditch if trapped by an oncoming tornado.

Please tell me you are 7?? A ditch is that thing on the side of any road that is lower than the road. Hopefully it is not full of water so when you have to dive into it to avoid the tornado, you drown.
