It's a catholic tradition. The parents choose a godfather and mother to look after their child if something were to happen to them (the parents).

In some Christian denominations, godparents stand with a child's parents at his baptism or christening and share in taking vows on the child's behalf.  It's understood that a godfather or godmother assumes responsibility for the child's spiritual education and upbringing if the parents become unable to do so.  Ideally, a godparent also becomes an adult friend to the child.

A godfather is a man that a Catholic child's parents choose for them at their Baptism. They choose a godfather and a godmother. These people are chosen to have a connection with the child. Sometimes, in another case, they are chosen to foster the child in case of a parent's death.
