there's two types. running and standing. running "runs" along the reins and divides into two parts (one for each rein). the standing one attaches to the nose band and the girth with a neck band around the horse's neck.

A martingale is used primarily to bring the horse's head down. A high-headed horse or "stargazer" as they are called is hard to control. By bringing the head down, it is possible to keep them "on the bit". If a horse is not on the bit, it is impossible to achieve a. impulsion b. flexion at the poll c. extension.

A. I don't believe in them, though. I've worked with a couple of horses who ran around like giraffes with their nose in the air, giving their gait a bit of a pigeon look. (So we've got these pigeon giraffes.. Anyway, that's not the point.) It's not terribly hard to get their head down, although more dominant horses take a bit more work and patience. I figure a good rider should be able to do it.

A breast plate, not the standing or running martingale attachment, keeps the saddle in place. The running or standing martingale attachment helps keep the horse's head down or stabilized. Traditionally, standing martingales were used to keep the horse's head down so the rider wouldn't get hit in the nose by the horse raising its head or neck too high. Now, standing martingales are used as an artificial aid to lower the horse's head.

Running martingales basically do the same thing, except they can be used to to help stabilize the contact with a rider with unsteady or bouncy hands. The running martingale can slow the horse down, but that would be because the horse's head was raised, and the downward pull of the running martingale caused pressure on the bars of the horse's mouth. An ill-fitting martingale can be as abusive and dangerous as draw reins. However, when they are correctly used, they can be extremely helpful.
