  1. a meta director is associated witht electrophilic substitution in an aromatic ring.. For the benzene ring..if an activating group is attached  say NH2 or OH or alkyl....they will direct any attacking elctrophile to the 2 position, ortho, ( the 1 position being the activating group ) and to the 4  or para position. All deactivating groups (( excepy halogens ), such as NO2, CN, COOH, SO3H, etc  direct an electrophile to the 3 , or meta posiiton
