  1. Not just 4, it means 4 sides, as in the area of a square.

    A square with a side equal to x has an area of x².  

    So an equation with the variable raised to the power of 2.

    Usually in the form of x² + x + c = 0

    or ax² + bx + c = 0

    or ax² + bx  = c
