  1. A "microtel" can be the name of a particular chain of hotels or in some locations in Europe, simply a hotel that features tiny rooms with basic amenities and space conscious floor plans.

    In the USA, Canada, the Philippines, Mexico and  Argentina Microtel is a specific chain of hotels. You can check out their website here:

    In Europe it is used as a general term for hotels with small rooms  (think tiny since European hotel rooms are small by western standards anyway). In many European microtels, all facilities are in one room. See

    I have stayed in Microtel here in the USA. The hotel rooms are very basic with a platform bed. The bathrooms have no amenities - basic shower head and thin, hard towels, no hairdryers, etc. However, for a place to crash while on the road or a single night stay somewhere, it was a decent value.
