  3. Every one of the other respondents is nearly right - but so very wrong. A crumpet is not a dessert, nor is it bread. In fact, there are even disputes here in the UK as to the difference between a &#039;crumpet&#039; and its nearest relative, the &#039;pikelet&#039;.

    Y&#039;see, my nan (my mother&#039;s mother) calls what my family would call a &#039;crumpet&#039; a pikelet. Now, she&#039;s Yorkshire born and bred, so is that merely a &#039;Yorkshire-ism&#039;? I have no idea whether she&#039;d term a pikelet a crumpet. I&#039;ll have to ask her the next time I see her.

    North of the border, in Scotland however, a crumpet is flat, which is what *I* would term a &#039;pikelet&#039;.
