As far what it takes to use one up -  A picture from a point and shoot digital camera - might take up from 1 to 3 megabytes on a memory card.  A gigabyte is a 1000 megabytes - so if your memory card has a capacity of 1 gigabyte and 1 picture takes up 2 megabytes, your card could hold about 500 pictures.
