Not a very accurate definition, but sometimes its clear why they call it that, take India for example, we're basically this big tectonic plate that came crashing into the Asia, and then became a part of it. And it sort of stick out from the rest of the continent.

    So i guess if it comprises a large part of a continent it could be classified as a sub continent.
