How can I tell if my ipod is third generation?

Because if  its a nano it looks like the ones in store now. a smaller version of the ipod classic but with a video screen and rounded edges.

if its a iPod full sized then the 3rd gen had seperate play buttons rather than round the click wheel and a firewire port and a dock connector.

When they apply the term "generation" to ipod you have, they are referring to the timeline the ipod was in retail. For example when referring to the nano generation one, they are talking about the very first nano released on the market (no longer sold). The nano generation one only comes in two colors and is larger in size and not as advanced as generation two or the current generation three which allows you to play video.

If you search the Apple website you can browse through the galleries and it will show you pictures of the different iPods in different generations.
