What is an Alternator?

An alternator is part of the charging system of your car that produces electricity for many devices.

I know I am just a girl, but my truck just went through 3 alternators. From what I was told and my understanding, the alternator is what charges your car's battery while it's running.

An Alternator maintains a DC voltage high enough to maintain the charge on your car's 12 volt battery.  If you have a gauge indicating your vehicle's voltage it will likely fluctuate between 12 volts (no charging) and 13.6 -14.3 V.  If it goes higher than this it means your alternator is over-charging.  Take your vehicle in to have it serviced. It likely means you need to get your battery, alternator, or voltage regulator (if it's not part of the alternator) replaced ... or both.

The alternator is what keeps your battery charged.  While your car is off... and running... it keeps your battery from going dead.  If it weren't for your alternator your battery would eventually die and you wouldn't be able to get your car started.

the alternator is what runs the car when its in running mode ,all the battery does is start it,the alternators job is to keep the battery charged and put out enough voltage to operate all the things on the vehicle that you use ,it keeps the battery charged up so the battery can do all of this,if it goes bad you quickly loose a charge in the battery,and the car wont no longer run,or will run poorly and not charge the battery back up,good luck.
