  1. A private IP address is one on the LAN (local area network) side or private side of the router.  The router will not route this IP address out its public side.  It will translate the private IP address to its WAN (wide area network) public IP address and router the traffic out with the public IP address being used; replies back to that WAN IP address are then translated by the router to the private IP address.  This protects the private network by not providing private IP addresses and by blocking incoming traffic that the router does not recognize as replies to specific requests.

Private IP addresses have defined numbering schemes.  The most common household and small business networks use a format 192.168.x.y wiht a 24 bit subnet mask of 255.255.255.0.  In this case x can range from 0 - 254 and the most common are 0 and 1; y can range from 1 - 254.  No two devices on the LAN side can have the same value for y and all devices on the LAN side have the same values for x in simple networks.

The IP address is an identifier much like a phone #
