What is angular velocity? Simple please.

I am trying to fill out a fireball sighting report and I don't understand what this means. Something about the speed relative to the earth right? Please help me understand!

When an object revolves around something, an angle it covers in a unit of time is called angular velocity. Angular velocity can be measured in revolutions, radians or degrees per unit time. The unit time can be a second, a minute or a year. When an object is moving up in the sky, it is hard to measure its velocity directly, but an angle it covered can be easily measured. If then you know how high the object was you can calculate how fast it was moving.

How fast did it appear to move across your field of view. You may have had a 45 degree angular field of view and you estimated it in view for 10 seconds.

How many degrees of arc did you estimate it to cross you field of view and how many seconds did it take. The number of degrees is the numerator and the time is the denominator.

You can re-create it by using your fist.Make a fist with your thumb on top. Hold you arm outstretched. Close one eye and view the fist. It makes an angle of aprox. 10 degrees with your eye. Try to recreate the viewing using your outstretched arm/fist and count in seconds how long the fireball appeared.
