I am starting next week, and I'm very excited. What should I bring the first day besides the book(s) that I buy and what do you think I can expect? Thanks!

PS I graduated out of HS in June 2008

I didn't realize how much 'older' people go to college

I went today to sign up and couldn't believe it.

  1. like high school but you have to be more self dependent.

Nobody will try to force you to do anything, you need to be there because you want to be.

You will see older people,I'm 59 and still take classes, things i"ll never use but it is good for the brain .

  2. Definately "high school all over again".

But really it is what you make it.  It will be very diverse, you will be in class with 60 years olds, 30 year olds and 18 year olds.  It is a good experience for someone who is not ready for a university setting.

  3. "My friends describe it as "high school all over again"

That's exactly how anyone I've ever known who's been to one has described it.

  4. Overall the community college experience depends largely on the state. Where I live its mostly relaxed, diverse (including age), and much more "student friendly" than a University. My community college has tutors, study groups, and peer counselors to help you out when needed. Besides your books (but sometimes the professors change their minds concerning the books, so you need them by day 2) will need to take paper, pencil, and a pen. The first day the professors usually give a syllabus of the class (an outline) which has everything detailed, what you need to do to get an A in the class, what is expected, rules, study plan, homework assignments, grading methods, and test dates. The first day is usually really light and gets out early, however, there is usually a homework assignment. If you are taking a lecture intensive course like biology or history, then I find a voice recorder very helpful so I don't miss anything (most instructors talk faster than I can write notes). In college you have the opportunity to make many friends and join countless clubs, they always have something going on. But, if you wish for a good gpa then studying and homework must come first, and keep the communication lines open with your professors. My college reminds me of an endurance race, they see how far, fast, and hard they can push you, and if you can take it you are rewarded with an A.

I go to school with those right out of high school and those that have retired, it is very diverse but the amazing thing is people are people no matter their age and everyone is usually very friendly and works together...

P.S. sometimes its a good idea to check out your professors before signing up for a class to see what you are getting into at ratemyprofessor.com

Good luck, I'm sure you will love it!

  5. My friends describe it as "high school all over again"

wouldn't know because I went straight to a four year university.
